Sjömän har använt stormglas för att förutse vädret i århundraden. På 1800-talet var ett till stor hjälp på Charles Darwins expeditioner i Sydamerika. HMS Beagles vice admiral Robert FitzRoy, amatörmeteorolog och myntare av ordet “forecast”, dokumenterade noggrant stormglasets kristaller och vädret som följde.
