Tips for making valuable compost:1. There must always be enough oxygen and moisture available for biological conversion. Compost heaps that are too loose dry out quickly. If it is compacted too much or placed at too high altitudes, too little oxygen is available to the soil organisms. Unfavourable transfer conditions lead to rot and can be recognised by the foul smell.2. Mix the compost material with each other if possible, e.g. lawn clippings, leaves, paper with coarser clippings from woody plants. All organic waste from the garden and kitchen (including eggshells and coffee grounds), finely chopped branches, twigs and autumn leaves, as well as newspaper (no magazines) and cardboard. The waste should be cut or chopped as small as possible to accelerate rotting. The coarser the material, the longer it takes to compost.
