Gomphotherium, which means “welded beast” is a proboscidean prehistoric animal believed to have existed in the early Miocene era; around 10 million years ago. It weighed approximately five tons and measured about 15 feet, making it a tad smaller than the Asian and African elephants of today. The Gomphotherium has four tusks, with the upper pair covered with enamel. These tusks are what they used for uprooting plants.
