This famous overure is often not credited to the person who actually composed it, the Vienna conductor Carl Binder (1816-1860). It was composed for a Vienna production of Offenbach's operetta and incorporates a some of the more well-known tunes, including the very popular Galop infernale, or Can-Can. The composer's own opening for his 1858 operetta is more of a short prelude or introduction, in contrast to the orchestral showpiece created by Binder.
