15 Soap Tree Seeds The soap tree is a Chinese tree with pretty compound foliage, yellow summer flowers and funny bladder-shaped fruits. Very rustic, it is an elegant tree with a spreading habit that requires little maintenance. The soap tree (Koelreuteria paniculata) is the most common species encountered in our gardens. It has the advantage of being very rustic and forming an elegant, spreading tree of small size, 6 to 8 m high. The young tree develops a globular crown, increasingly spreading and equipped with tortuous branches falling gracefully at the ends with age. The smooth gray bark becomes grooved with orange cracks. Its growth is slow, bud burst late and longevity is 200 years. The soap tree does not like wind or sea spray. It grows in compact or very porous, limestone, dry or superficial soil but does not like submerged or acidic soils. Plant it in a perfectly sunny situation. Hot summers encourage abundant flowering. It is ideal for small gardens with its rounded shape and moderate growth.
