Branches are brown, tetrahedral, with a sharp aroma. Taproot is well-branched, with a large number of adventitious roots. The leaves are large, green, opposite. The flowers are numerous, lavender, two-lipped, collected in dense intermittent paniculate-spike inflorescences at the tops of the branches. The fruit is a black, dry, four-celled spherical drupe 3-4 mm in diameter.
